Radionuclides

Team Background:

Many DOE and NRC sites and some Superfund and DOD sites had radioactive contamination. Characterizing and cleaning up these sites was expensive and time-consuming. Since its inception in 1999, the ITRC Radionuclides Team focused on facilitating decision-making and cleanup of these radioactively contaminated sites, producing four guidance documents and three companion Internet-based trainings to increase awareness and acceptance of technical successes and regulatory processes associated with radioactive contamination.

The team completed and published a new technical and regulatory guidance document—Decontamination and Decommissioning of Radiologically Contaminated Facilitiesin January 2008. This guidance provides overviews of technologies and pertinent regulations associated with decommissioning radioactively contaminated sites.
