Many DOE and NRC sites and some Superfund and DOD sites have radioactive contamination. Characterizing and cleaning up these sites are expensive and time-consuming. Since its inception in 1999, the ITRC Radionuclides Team has focused on facilitating decision making and cleanup of these radioactively contaminated sites, producing four guidance documents and three companion Internet-based trainings to increase awareness and acceptance of technical successes and regulatory processes associated with radioactive contamination.

The team has now compiled a new technical and regulatory guidance document—Decontamination and Decommissioning of Radiologically Contaminated Facilities—to be published in late 2007. This guidance provides overviews of technologies and pertinent regulations associated with decommissioning radioactively contaminated sites. An accompanying Internet-based training will be offered in 2008.
