Membership FAQs

What are ITRC technical work teams?
ITRC teams are the primary mechanism for state and local government, federal agency, public/tribal stakeholder, and private sector (industry and trade association) membership in ITRC. The teams provide a forum for information exchange and technology transfer among states and other parties and ultimately capture this value in ITRC documents, training courses, and other products.

Who can be a member?
Participants from a wide variety of organizations and agencies are invited to apply for membership in ITRC. Because of the participation requirements listed below, members are typically from the United States or Canada. Interested parties from other parts of the world should contact the team leader before applying for a technical project team.

Applicants from state and local government agencies, academia, and public/tribal stakeholder organizations must pledge 10% of their professional time to be a member. Members are expected to participate by providing substantive input, as determined by team leaders.

Individuals from federal agencies and the private sector are not required to pledge 10% of their time to be a member.

Before applicants from the private sector (industry and trade associations) can participate on a team, their company must join the Industry Affiliates Program (IAP) at the Standard or Gold Membership level.

What are the benefits of membership?
ITRC membership benefits different participants in a variety of ways:

  • helping regulators to build their knowledge base and raise their confidence about new environmental technologies
  • helping regulators save time and money when evaluating environmental technologies
  • guiding technology developers in the collection of performance data to satisfy the requirements of multiple states
  • helping technology vendors avoid the time and expense of conducting costly and duplicative demonstrations
  • participating in a national network of environmental community experts to gain cutting-edge information on the deployment of innovative technologies

What does membership entail?
Typically, a professional time commitment of at least 10% for the calendar year, which can be met in various ways:

  • participation on team conference calls
  • attendance at ITRC meetings/conferences (based upon an in-kind contribution of time, states and stakeholders are provided with travel funding for ITRC meetings)
  • writing and reviewing documents
  • arranging site visits to facilities
  • providing educational information on technologies
  • providing market information on site technology needs

A typical member's participation might be as follows:

  • Attend Spring Membership Meeting: three 8-hour days = 24 hours
  • Attend one team meeting: three 8-hour days = 24 hours
  • Attend Fall Meeting: four 8-hour days = 32 hours
  • Conference calls: twelve 1-hour monthly calls = 12 hours
  • Document development: 10 hours per month = 120 hours

Total = 212 hours (~10% FTE)

Who establishes ITRC Teams?
ITRC's Board of Advisors represents the various groups important to ITRC: state agencies, industry, and other stakeholders, with liaisons from federal agencies and state associations. The ITRC Strategic Plan page contains more information on ITRC's mission.

Is travel assistance available?
As resources allow, travel costs for attendance at ITRC meetings are reimbursed for state employees and public/tribal stakeholder participants who commit 10% of their time to ITRC. (Anyone who earns income by working in the environmental field is not considered a citizen stakeholder for the purposes of ITRC.)

Is membership transferable?
Membership and its benefits, including travel assistance, cannot be transferred midyear to alternates or others.
